Computer Repair Topic: What is RAM?
You know that you want a lot of it, but do you know what it actually is? Let’s find out!
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. RAM is a form of very fast temporary memory. Temporary memory in a computer is also referred to as “volatile” memory. Once you turn off your computer, the contents of the memory is lost. You wouldn’t want to store your Christmas photos in RAM.
Your computer uses RAM to keep track of information that’s important to keep your system running. The programs on your computer also utilize RAM to temporarily store important information. Having too little RAM will make your computer very slow.
The amount of RAM your computer needs to run efficiently depends on what you’re using it for. If you’re editing video or music, the more RAM the better. Some applications will make use of a lot of RAM, while others can make do with relatively little. Most home computers come standard with 4 to 8 gigabytes of RAM, but many have significantly more.
We would be happy to discuss RAM and how it relates to your computer performance (or lack thereof) or any other computer-related topic to you. Installing additional RAM is one of our many specialties.
