Virus and Malware Questions

Common signs include pop-ups, browser redirects, slow performance, and unknown programs appearing or weird software that “appears” out of no-where seemingly.
Can viruses steal personal information?
Yes. Some malware is specifically designed to capture passwords, financial information, and private data.
How long does virus removal take?
Most virus removal jobs take between one and three hours.
Can malware damage files?
Yes. Some malware encrypts or deletes files or otherwise damages them.

Antivirus programs help prevent infections but some infections require manual removal.
Can viruses spread across my home network?
Yes. Certain malware can infect multiple devices on the same network but not usually.
Should I disconnect the internet if I have a virus?
Yes. Disconnecting the internet can prevent malware from communicating with remote servers.
Can malware slow down my computer?
Yes. Malware often runs hidden processes that consume system resources.
Do smartphones get viruses?
Phones can become infected with malicious apps or spyware.
Do Macs get malware?
Yes, although less common than Windows infections but not for the reason you might think. It’s not because Macs are safer, it’s because there are less of them.
Laptop Problems

A black screen may indicate display failure, graphics problems, or motherboard issues.
Can a laptop screen be replaced?
Yes. Screen replacement is one of the most common laptop repairs.
Networking and Internet Issues
Why is my Wi-Fi so slow?
Often when I show up to an on-site for a network analysis I have slow speed (measured in MBPS or Megabits per second), poor router placement or bad signal density.
Why can’t my device connect to the Wi-Fi?
Common causes include wrong password, router restart needed, IP conflict, or the device being out of range. Sometimes anti-virus issues can cause network issues too.
Why does my internet keep dropping out?
Frequent drops can come from loose cables, overheating modem/router, ISP outages, channel interference, or faulty hardware like a failing network card, signal density or bad device performance.
Should I restart my router or modem first?
Yes—always power cycle the modem first (unplug 30 seconds), then the router. This fixes most temporary glitches, IP lease problems, and minor ISP hiccups.
Why is my wired connection not working but Wi-Fi is?
Wired issues often mean bad Ethernet cable, loose port connection, faulty network card, or switch/router port problems.
How do I know if the problem is my network or my ISP?
Often times you can’t. You can check for any outage by calling the ISP or checking your ISP app or webpage for listed outages.
Can too many devices slow down my home network?
Yes. Bandwidth gets divided among devices—streaming especially on older routers. Not so much on new ones
Is my home Wi-Fi secure?
Check for WPA3 or at least WPA2 encryption, strong unique password, guest network for visitors, and disable WPS. I can audit and secure it during a visit if needed.
Why can’t my devices see each other on the network?
File sharing settings may need tweaking.
